Lilongwe - School Report Question and Answers

Are students generally challenged appropriately by the curriculum? Please describe any particular strengths or weaknesses in this area. Do you have any thoughts how the curriculum is applied and implemented at this school?

School day is very short, only 7:30 - 12:30 for kindergarten and 1st grade (which is year 1 and year 2 at BMIS), inclusive of two snack times, recess, and specialized courses (art, music, PE, French, Library)- Fridays is a short day ending at 11:40am for everyone. While teachers are very kind and I know many are dedicated and try hard, my daughter has not been challenged, and to date has not learned to read. She and her peers are behind international levels for core topics like math, reading, etc. It seems to me that the school does not meet the 180 days of required teaching days. However, they are working to increase the teaching days to almost 180, and working to strengthen standardization within math and after that other topics. - Jan 2022
