It's one of the poorest countries on earth. As a Westerner you always are a target. Kidnapping for ransom occurs in neighboring countries. We always wonder when/if it will spread here. Most of the neighboring countries are experiencing some form of civil unrest. Chad has been calm the past few years but has a history of civil war. - Apr 2014
Crime and scams. Most locals will try and pull a fast one on you at least once. That includes your household staff. Local Embassy employees are better, but sometimes get caught stealing. Political unrest is a constant. As Chadian themselves put it, “everyone is a rebel”. Americans are instructed to not walk outside after dark. - Nov 2006
