Caracas - Post Report Question and Answers

Would someone with physical disabilities have difficulties living in this city?

I think they might, especially if they need certain medical services. Caracas has well-trained doctors but a serious lack of medicines, supplies, and equipment. At some hospitals, patients are asked to bring their own needles for lab services, for examples. - May 2015

Yes. Many. - Apr 2015

Sidewalks are broken, streets are steeply angled, few places have hadicapped access, elevators (when they're working) often have doors too narrow for a wheelchair. Lighting is often burned out or so dim to be ineffective. Pharmacies are unable to import medicines, even common medicines as basic as acetaminophen or ibuprofen. - Nov 2014

Sidewalks, ramps, and wide aisles in supermarkets are missing but handicap-accessible parking spots places exist and public TV broadcast often have sign-language interpreters on screen. A few elevators have braille on the buttons. - Sep 2013

I would think it would be a nightmare to have a physical disability here, just based on the things I've seen. My mother-in-law has trouble with stairs, and there are at least a few stairs everywhere we go. - Aug 2012

Plenty. The sidewalks (if they exist) are mostly broken. It makes pushing a stroller difficult; no way someone with a wheelchair could get around here. - Mar 2012

It is not particularly wheel-chair friendly. - Mar 2011

The sidewalks and roads are severely in need of repair, and there is almost no care for people with physical disabilities. - Jan 2011

Many. The streets and sidewalks are in disrepair and many are very steep. Accomodations seems rare. - Oct 2010

This is not an accessible city and it is not safe to walk anywhere outside of the neighborhood where the embassy is located. You will drive everywhere you go. Sidewalks (and roads for that matter) are very poorly maintained. - Sep 2010

This is the least walkable city in all of Latin America in our experience. Sidewalks are spotty and, when available, are in such poor condition that even people without disabilities have problems walking on them. - Mar 2010

Too many to note. This city is full of terrible streets and has few sidewalks. I have never seen a person in a wheelchair here. - Mar 2010

A lot. It's a large, run down city with a lot of crime. If you're disabled, you're that much more of a target. - Feb 2009

Don't even bother to come. Absolutely no thought or accommodation given to any physical disabilities. - Nov 2008
