It's a place full of nuances and subtexts. Its international reputation can be misleading. It can be a tough place for many of its citizens, in ways that a foreigner often may not see, but there's a lot to admire and appreciate, too. Not least of which is the grit, self-reliance, and resolve that saw Eritreans through almost six decades of war and/or cold war with the former Ethiopian regime. However, it's fascinating also to see the joy Eritreans take in the new peace with Ethiopia and the sincere goodwill they have for most Ethiopians, and many family connections across the newly-opened border. - Feb 2019
