Gaborone - Post Report Question and Answers
Are there any particular mental health issues that tend to crop up at post, such as Seasonal Affective Disorder (winter blues)?
Morale at post isn't terribly high. Everyone is overworked and stressed out. We thought this would be a quiet, sleepy post - it definitely isn't! On the plus side, there's some interesting and challenging work happening here. - Aug 2024
Morale at post is quite bad and probably causes low level depression in some. There have also been some EFM cliques that have created a "mean girls" culture that has been harmful to some families. - Dec 2023
Only seasonal boredom disorder when you aren't taking enough regional trips. - Jul 2019
I don't know of any mental health issues, but I think morale at post is rather poor. Many would prefer this to be a two-year assignment rather than a three year tour. This isn't a matter of hardship as Botswana is pretty well-developed and modern. It is just that both personally and professionally, this his not a place to be long term. Gaborone is a pretty boring place, and the issues being addressed here are not critical to U.S. foreign policy. A lot of people would prefer to move on sooner rather than later from what I have observed. - Apr 2017
