Kathmandu - Post Report Question and Answers

Is this a good city for LGBT expatriates? Why or why not?

yes! Nepalis are very LGBT+ friendly. I know many LGBT+ individuals are very happy here. - Aug 2022

Yes. Nepalis are becoming more excepting of the LGBT community. We had our first Pride Parade this year! You may face discrimination outside the valley where attitudes are more conservative. - Aug 2019

yes, Nepali culture is accepting of everyone. - Aug 2015

Nepal is surprisingly tolerant of the LGBT community despite the fact most of the society is very conservative. I knew a number of gay expats who seemed to be happy in Kathmandu. - Jul 2014

Can't really speak to this. I've never seen any gay PDA but also never heard of any targeted attacks. I'm sure there is a low profile community. It is common to see men holding hands in public but that does not mean they are gay. - May 2014

I am not sure. I don't see a lot of couples holding hands of any sort. It seems like PDAs are looked down upon, so gay PDAs might be shocking to people. That being said, my husband and I hold hands and kiss all the time, and we don't get any stares from people. It is my experience that the Nepali people are very kind and accepting. - Apr 2014

Kathmandu is pretty open to homosexuals. - Dec 2013

Not entirely sure, but it seems okay. I haven't noticed anyone explicitly against gay/lesbian expats or locals, though it is a conservative culture. - Jun 2013

I know many gay people who are happy here. - May 2013

It is a traditional culture. That said, the media does report openly about some gay issues. I know people who are gay here but don't know what their experience has been like. - May 2008
