What types of jobs do most expatriate spouses/partners have? Locally based or telecommuting? Full-time or part-time? Can you comment on local salary scales?

This is currently changing for the USG but generally there are jobs with international schools, NGOs, and foreign diplomatic missions. Working on the local economy outside of the expat circle could be rewarding but may not pay anything. - Apr 2025

Most expat spouses work at the Embassy and a handful telework or work in the international school system. I am not aware of anyone that works on the economy, likely because of both the language barrier and low Nepali wages. - Jun 2024

Many spouses/partners work at the embassy or telecommute for U.S. companies. I think it is hard to get jobs on the local economy because of restrictions and also language skills. - Aug 2022

Most spouses work at the Embassy. Some telecommute, and other's have found jobs are NGO's. Local salaries are really low, $500/month or lower. - Aug 2019

No. They can be hard to find, pay little, and work permits are very difficult to obtain. - Aug 2015

Not a lot. If your skills are in the development field, you'll do much better. There were a lot of jobs at the Embassy but not usually matching with the experience levels of our family members. - Jul 2014

It's tough to get a job once you get here in the NGO world -- get one before you come if you can. The U.S. Embassy has 2 EPAP positions and several other EFM positions. - May 2014

Nope. None. - Apr 2014

There are a lot of NGO opportunities. Local firms tend to pay very low salaries. - Jun 2013

I'm not sure about paid jobs, but there are plenty of volunteer opportunities. - Jun 2011

Not too many. There is a large opportunity for humanitarian work. - Jan 2010

No. Some NGOs. EFM jobs at the embassy pay very little. - May 2008
