What types of jobs do most expatriate spouses/partners have? Locally based or telecommuting? Full-time or part-time? Can you comment on local salary scales?

There are work opportunities at the embassy but while we were there the hiring process could be lengthy. Several EFMs (including me) teleworked for our employers, which is a great option and was well supported by post leadership. - May 2022

With the hiring freeze, spouses who are working are typically working on a freelance/telecommuting basis. I understand it is possible to work locally, though I don't know many doing this. - Oct 2017

Unless you work at your embassy or the American school, it will be nearly impossible to find a job on the local market without fluency in French, Arabic, or both. Pay is about 40 percent of the average U.S. salary for the same type of work. - Oct 2017

Not unless you work at the school or in an English language teaching position. - Jul 2014

Not on the local economy, but there is a good range of options in the Embassy (in addition to the usual CLO, Mail Room, Commissary jobs, there are some "EPAP" jobs doing FSO-like work) and at other institutions around town, like the school. - Nov 2011

I was highly skilled and had a very tough time finding work. - Nov 2011

Local....not really. However, the embassy does have openings for family members advertised in the embassy newsletter all the time. - Apr 2010

I see some advertised in the embassy newsletter but I don't know anyone who works on the local economy. - Jun 2008
