How much of the local language do you need for daily living? Are local language classes/tutors available and affordable?

None. - Aug 2015
None, but a little Wolof or Mandinka goes far. If you just speak English you'll skim the surface of society here. - Jun 2014
None at all - The Gambia is a former UK colony so they speak English. That said, learning Wollof or Mandinka goes a long way to win over the locals (but a smile and wave also works if you are intimidated by languages). - Jun 2013
None. But, it is nice to know some Wolof greetings. It definitely makes people happy when you make the attempt. - Sep 2011
