How much of the local language do you need for daily living? Are local language classes/tutors available and affordable?
You can get by without knowing much Chinese, but you miss out on A LOT. Generally, pointing and gesturing will get the things you need, but without being able to speak Chinese, you'd miss out on friendships, deals, and being a part of the culture. - Aug 2011
