Man, so so many. The treehouse rooms at Caves Branch are worth the off-season rates, and Caves Branch has the best pool around. Go hiking or biking in the Pine Ridge mountains for amazing vistas. Hike to the top of the Upper Antelope Falls with a picnic in Mayflower Bocawina National Park. Don’t stop at the base of the falls, there is an intense trail to the very top with a crazy lookout of rocks and have your picnic here, but wait... You think you have gotten to the top of the trail, but if you follow the small trail up even more, you will find a deep pool of crystal-clear water and medium sized secondary falls. The trail was almost always deserted, and I never had to share the upper falls and pool with anyone. It was always magical. Def a best kept secret. - Aug 2026

The Belize Zoo is great. Halfway between Belmopan and Belize City, it has jaguars, tapirs, howler monkeys, etc. It is all indigenous animals and many of them are rescues or, like in the case of the jaguars, captured to protect them as they were attacking livestock. Caracol is an hour or two drive away, and is the largest Mayan ruins in Belize. Other nearby ruins are Cahal Pech, Xunantunich, Altun Ha, and Lamanai. The top ten on trip advisor will get you off to a good start. Tikal, Tulum, Bachalar are some great destinations for long weekend get aways. Snorkeling the reef is just as good as diving the reef. - Feb 2019

There are an amazing number of different ways to experience all the natural beauty that Belize has to offer. Two years is the perfect amount of time to see it all! Really, it's too much to list here but there are great hikes, birding, jungle exploring, and swimming just a very short drive from Belmopan - and the rest is easily accessible on the weekends. It's a very small country but there is so much to do here. I love buying a pound of fresh tortillas for a dollar from little houses! - Jun 2015

Touring the Mayan ruins in Belize and nearby Guatemala. The ruins are spectacular, particularly Tikal (Guatemala), and Caracol (Belize). If you're a beach, boat or diving person, you're in paradise (or at least 60 miles from paradise). If you're looking for sophisticated dining or entertainment, you are SOL. Visiting nearby countries in Central America (except southern Mexico and northern Guatemala) is difficult. Capital cities of other nearby countries are distant by road (Guatemala City is 8-10 hours), and there are only a few weekly flights to San Salvador, with connections to elsewhere in Central America. - Jan 2011
