New Delhi - Post Report Question and Answers
Is this a "shopping post"? Are there interesting handicrafts, artwork, antiques, or other items that people typically buy there?
Many things for sale. Can buy anything. - Jun 2024
Yes, there are many opportunities to buy beautiful handicrafts and artwork. There are many longstanding melas and baazars where you can barter for a good deal. - Apr 2024
Yes. A paradise for shoppers especially if looking for crafts which are affordable. Ditto for cloth and clothes. Ditto for wood, brass, jewelry carpets, furniture, etc., since labor is very cheap so prices are more reflective of materials. High quality art is also available for a price. - Apr 2024
Tons of handicrafts, artworks, and antiques - some museum quality for a price - at markets and shops all over the city. Also, carpets, carvings, brass ornaments, gold jewelry, etc. Lots to buy in Delhi and around India. - Sep 2020
Frankly, I’ve been disappointed with Indian handicraft and souvenir buying options. I expected to be overjoyed by the options but have instead been underwhelmed. Many of the items at “melas” (that’s the local name for a craft fair) are bland, imported, manufactured, boring. I’ve bought a decent amount of jewelry and clothing. I like the white marble items – picture frames, soap dishes, small boxes, etc. Lots of people buy carpets, but I think those are imported from Pakistan or Afghanistan. - Jul 2020

Paper products are beautiful. You can get some wonderful pieces of furniture. One of the best buys are the textiles made up into tablecloths, napkins, and bedding. - Mar 2008
There are so many things here worth noting, things we've bought are spices, teas, pashminas, jewelry, artwork, incense...the list goes on and on. Load up on presents for birthdays and holidays for sure. We bought a 12x24 inch traditional Indian drawing for US$12. We found one on an American website for US$180. That's money well spent in my book. - Feb 2008
