New Delhi - Post Report Question and Answers

What types of jobs do most expatriate spouses/partners have? Locally based or telecommuting? Full-time or part-time? Can you comment on local salary scales?

Most fulfilling paid seems to be teleworking. Local salaries would be low for most. Probably too low to be of interest. Teachers of many types. Some work for NGOs, UN, or multi-nationals. - Jun 2024

Most people just work at the Embassy. It's a massive Embassy and jobs are readily available. Working in the local market is possible, but not advised (local salaries are not high). - Jan 2022

It's a huge embassy so there are a good deal of options for EFMs in the mission. Locally, not sure. You'd need good contact/connections or find something that could be done remotely (bearing in mind the bizzare 10.5 hour time difference). - Sep 2020

EFM jobs are available at the Embassy. Some spouses work with the associated school. - Jul 2019

If you're straight - your spouse is eligible for a work visa and can work on the local economy. Local economy starting salaries are about $100 a month. Which means your spouse will get paid less than your housekeeper. If you're gay - they're not getting a visa or work permit - so this question is moot. - Dec 2017

Most EFMs rely on embassy employment, which is almost impossible to get with the hiring freeze. Some of them start their own businesses but there are many regulations in regards to owning the business and being employed on a local market (extremely hard). The taxation system does not work in a favor for local employment as well. - Oct 2017

Lots of jobs at the embassy. Did not hear of any on the economy - not really worth it as you'll be paid in rupees at local rates! - Feb 2017

Working locally can be a challenge. A lot of spouses work at their missions, though it can take a lot of time to get all the paperwork cleared. Local salary scales are really low. - Nov 2016

Finding jobs that are professionally and financially rewarding for spouses is problematic. The Indian government is slow and bureaucratic when asked to approve spouses for work outside the embassy. Be aware that local salary scales are much lower than in more-developed countries. - Jun 2016

Difficulty in obtaining a work permit makes this off limits for most serious jobs. Check the CLO's FAMER report for the typical range of in-house opportunities. - Sep 2014

Not a great deal that I know of personally. - Sep 2014

I think I've already answered this question. A resounding NO to employment opportunities. - Aug 2013

Hmm, this varies, but visas are tough to get. - May 2013

Yes but obtaining the appropriate visa is challenging. - Oct 2012

Not really. - Sep 2012

They are becoming increasingly difficult to come by. Labor laws and visas rules are tightening. - Aug 2011

Not much with a real income, but lots of ways to engage. - Jan 2011

No. A few NGOs hire at local pay rates, but there are many, many volunteer activities (unpaid). - Sep 2010

Not really. - Aug 2010
