Sarajevo - Post Report Question and Answers

Are local buses, trams, trains or taxis safe and affordable?

Buses, trams, and trains are havens for invisible petty crime. Use common sense when riding; if you are obviously attentive and avoid getting on the ones packed tight you should be fine. Prices are cheap. Usage is limited because of the scarcity of routes (trams/busses) or low frequency (trains). - Mar 2024

The train system is terrible. Taxis are the way to go in town. Incredibly inexpensive. There is no excuse for drunk driving in Sarajevo. You can get from downtown to any of the normal housing areas for $3-5. - Nov 2012

Taxis are safe and cheap. Buses are cheap too, but there are pick pockets, and given the ease of taking a taxi, there's no reason to board a bus. Train service is very limited, but improving. - May 2010

We were advised not to use the buses or trams due to pickpockets. But my daughter and son rode them all the time without problems. Taxis are very safe and I think very affordable. Buses and trams are very cheap. - Jun 2009
