Algiers - Post Report Question and Answers

Are qualified veterinarians and/or good kennel services available? Do animals need to be quarantined upon entry to the country? Are there other considerations regarding pets that are particular to this country?

Yes, good options for vets. No quarantine required. - Dec 2021

A few good vets available. - Oct 2021

Dr. Abdennebi is great and many of us use him. My helper keeps my dog when I travel and she is wonderful with that. It wasn't very hard to bring my dog here but recommend flying through Lufthansa and not Air France (Paris is tough during the layover as there is no green space). Algerians don't generally like dogs and many are scared of them. Dogs here are seen as functional animals and not like we would in the US. That being said my dog has made a lot of animal friends here and most interactions I have with people are positive. Always walk your dog on a leash because there are stray cats (and sometimes dogs) everywhere and they are aggressive. Also, you sometimes hear fireworks or gunshots and that has driven my dog crazy. - Aug 2021

Yes, there are pretty good vets here. We brought two cats, and recently found a vet to come to our house to give them rabies shots. No quarantine required. Normal considerations to bring your animal to posts - all the shots and the paperwork. I can almost guarantee that none of that will even be glanced at when you come into the country toting your dogs and cats. - Apr 2021

Do not let your pets out, cars and other animals can get to them. - Oct 2020

Yes vets are available. No quarantined required. Dogs are not overly welcomed. - Mar 2019

Yes! Some great vets and the American Embassy uses a good kennel service. Quarantine is not required for entry but a saintly patience is because the customs paperwork/procedures can be unreal. Just remember that pets have short memories and soon will be like 'what airport?' - Sep 2016

Yes there is very good vet who has a kennel. Animals don't need to be quarantined. But bring your animal in the plane with you on the flight. If you send it in cargo you will enter the sucking vortex that is Algerian customs. - Jun 2016

No, they didn't even bother looking at our dog's paperwork when we brought him in. There are is a reliable vet who also runs a kennel that our dog is always excited to go to. - Mar 2014

Not in my experience. - Dec 2011
