Bamako - Post Report Question and Answers

Do you have any other comments?

Power is very dirty here, so bring plenty of transformers and step-up/step-down converters and expect some of your electronics to get blown out, and refrigerators/freezers to not work sporadically. Water outages don't happen as often but they do occur. - Apr 2017

It takes a special kind of person to do well in West Africa. It is a very basic place, and you have to slow down ALOT from the Western pace or you will go crazy. - Jul 2011

If you can stand the heat, jump into the fire. Despite all the frustrations of living in Bamako you will enjoy your tour in Mali. The leadership at the US Embassy will be changing late next year, so hopefully it will be an even better Post. - Oct 2010

My first embassy post, I'm having a good time, the people are great but if I can leave tomorrow, I would :).This is a very very very very poor country - May 2010

People are very friendly. - Apr 2009

Mali is a great hardship post. Safe, exotic, interesting, affordable. But it is a hardship post and it's in the middle of no where. Do not come here if you expect some kind of urban utopia. Mali is one of the world's poorest countries, but that said, the people are fantastic and there are so many interesting things to see and experience here. Come with patience, tolerance and an adventurous spirit and you will be well rewarded. - Feb 2009

We found it to be a wonderful experience. It was tough at times, and I think it's definitely a hardship post, but it's not as tough as many. The people are wonderful, the culture fascinating, and when I was there the embassy community was wonderful, and my work was very interesting. If you have a good attitude and embrace the situation you can have a great time. I've recommended it to many friends. - Feb 2009

You can make good friends here and have a nice time if you don't need a lot of museums, historic sites and other attractions to make you happy. Make your own fun, and it will be fine. - Jan 2009
