What are some typical ways to socialize, either with local people or with other expatriates? Are there groups or clubs that you can recommend?

People have formed their own groups: setting up a time to play volleyball, do yoga together, or go on weekly hikes. It is the kind of place where you have to make your own fun. Most get togethers for embassy folks are either at the pool area or at one another's homes. There are a lot of restaurants here and the CLO usually plans a few things a month to do together. - Jan 2020


You make your own fun. There are quiz nights and some bars. People often entertain themselves; parking is always a challenge at local restaurants/bars etc, so it is much easier if you have friends come to your place or you go to theirs. - Jun 2018


Exercise, hanging out at the embassy pool, Marine house happy hours or movies, entertaining at home, and going to restaurants are most common. Les Gourmettes is a club for expat spouses and has activities in French and English. There are a few local swimming and tennis clubs, but they aren't popular with Americans since our facilities are free and nicer. - Apr 2017

Movie nights, dinner with friends, weekends at the pool at the embassy or ASOY, a lot of nights with my older kids' friends in my living room eating my food. - Mar 2010


Lots of nightlife oportunities, many clubs, small bars and cabarets and of course entertaining in homes and garden parties. Can get old after a while. - Jan 2010


There are plenty of opportunities to host and attend gatherings and they are fairly frequent. GSO provides tents, dishes, and other equipment to make parties more enjoyable and feasible. - Nov 2008
