Almaty - Post Report Question and Answers

Are there any particular health concerns? What is the quality of available medical care? What medical conditions typically require medical evacuation?

Air pollution in winter is bad due to coal burning to run central city heating system. Because winter is cold, we have more respiratory issues and colds, it’s also dry here so people tend to complain when first arrive about dry skin and chapped lips. Moisturiser and humidifiers for kids bedrooms are recommended. Any surgery or major issue will be medevacced - Sep 2023

Respiratory concerns as air quality is poor and most medical procedures require a trip to Europe. The regional medical officer is based here, so they have walk-in hours to take care of minor issues. There are two decent clinics for emergencies. - Aug 2015

Air quality. Good quality care can be found. Most people use the IMC or the SOS clinics. - Jul 2013

Local health care is average/poor quality. We are official Americans, so we use the RMO, but you get medevac'd for almost anything more than a simple injury. - Feb 2013

Other than the air pollution, this is a good post healthwise. Minor stuff can be dealt with here. - May 2012

Medical services are poor, locally. USG med unit is not equipped with xrays or other more sophisticated technology. Dental services seem to be adequate. - Mar 2010

Most tend to have diarrhea when moving here. - Mar 2008
