Tijuana - Post Report Question and Answers
Is it easy to make friends with locals here? Are there any prejudices or any ethnic groups who might feel uncomfortable here?
We are discouraged (post practice) from making local friends because so many locals in our nice neighborhoods are involved in illicit trades. There are people here of many ethnicities and it is generally welcoming to all races, genders, orientations, etc There is a large Chinese-Mexican community and a female Jewish President. Mexico, especially in urban areas, is welcoming. - Oct 2024
I do not think that Mexicans are particularly welcoming of people of African descent especially due to the Haitian diaspora here in Tijuana – many of whom came to the border with the hopes of gaining asylum status in the US, only to end up residents in Mexico. Having said that, my spouse is black and did not feel that it was that different here than in the US(for whatever that this worth). I do not think, based upon what I have been told, that it is nearly as bad as the other border posts where people are more overly hostile and racist towards people of African descent (think cities along the Texas-Mexico border). - Apr 2023
