How much of the local language do you need for daily living? Are local language classes/tutors available and affordable?
The two national languages in Malta are Maltese and English so a grasp of either language will serve you well. There are language classes and tutors available, but I do not know the costs. - May 2023
None really, 95% of the island speaks English. - Oct 2018
None. Maltese and English are the two official languages of Malta. That said, you will often need to repeat yourself to Maltese when speaking English to anyone who isn't used to hearing English quite a bit throughout the day. Example, at the store or at a small business and usually on the phone. At the Embassy or other places where English is spoken frequently, not so much. Sometimes, if you engage with uneducated Maltese, they will speak little to no English as they didn't finish school and Maltese learn English in school. - Sep 2016
Most everyone speaks great English. Some older Maltese speak choppy English, but are still friendly and helpful. The language is an odd mix of Italian, Arabic and North African dialects. - Jan 2014
None. - Feb 2010
None. Almost everyone, except for the southern reaches of the island, speaks decent English. A little Maltese will surprise and endear. Lots of Italian and Arabic spoken here as well. - Feb 2010
Almost none, although in some of the poorer areas of the island, locals don't understand English very well. - Jul 2009
