Valletta - Post Report Question and Answers

What is the availability and cost of household help, and what types of help are typically employed by expatriates?

Many families were able to get nannies for their children at a fairly reasonable cost, but know that you will pay more in Malta than you would in a developing world country. I employed a cleaning service on a weekly basis for approximately $100-150 a month and I was very happy with their service. - May 2023

The economy is doing well, most Maltese don't seem to be into doing domestic work. The Filipino community is available for domestic help at a reasonable price. - Oct 2018

Fairly available and ranges up to 8 euro/hr. Some have used local Maltese, some a service and some have gone with the Phillipino mafia (we call them) that are good and also babysit. If they're foreign, you may have to be willing to sponsor and that can cost extra. - Sep 2016

Domestic help is available, but not inexpensive. There are locals and some Romanian or Filipino workers. Most help will cost 5-7 euro per hour. Most expats have some part-time help, but few afford to employ anyone full time. Finding babysitters can be taxing, as in Maltese society teenagers do not babysit, but the grandparents. There are not a lot of child-care providers after hours, though a service is available for 9 euro/hour. Ouch. Most find there own via word of mouth or classifieds. - Jan 2014

Costly. - Feb 2010

Philipino help is available for about $7.50/hour (Minimum wage).Generally available although the Maltese govt is cracking down on itinerant laborers so future travelers may have to suffer Maltese service. - Feb 2010

Somewhat available, although over half of embassy employees hire non-Maltese domestic help, so they need to help them with work permits. Average cost is 6 euros per hour. - Jul 2009
