Johannesburg - Post Report Question and Answers

Would someone with physical disabilities have difficulties living in this city?

Yes. - Aug 2023

Broken sidewalks are the norm here. It’d be difficult for a mobility-impaired person to get around the city of Johannesburg, let alone the wilds of South Africa. Local medical care seems to be of a high quality, so Johannesburg is an ideal post for employees with a restricted medical clearance. - Aug 2022

My guess would be no. No-one walks anywhere anyway, so if your lifestyle is already adapted to driving, you're good. And most of your activities outside the home and office are in accessible malls - or at least you can find everything you'd need in an accessible mall. - Jun 2022

I would think Joburg would actually be better for people with physical challenges than most cities on the continent. - Oct 2019

Not too much trouble - there are generally accommodations. - Apr 2017

there are some accomodations for people w/physical disabilities but its not 100% up to date. - Aug 2011

There are not a lot of sidewalks, and if you are in a wheelchair, traffic doesn't slow down for you while you are in the street. Most malls, etc. have elevators and escalators. - Jul 2010

Should be ok--there are elevators and ramps in most places. - Oct 2009
