Paramaribo - Post Report Question and Answers

What types of jobs do most expatriate spouses/partners have? Locally based or telecommuting? Full-time or part-time? Can you comment on local salary scales?

There are several jobs available for Americans at the US Embassy, international schools, and non-government organizations. I am unaware of any spouses that are employed in the Suriname private sector. - Apr 2022

Most EFMs who want to work seem to have been able to do so. There are usually more EFM job vacancies than there are applicants. - Feb 2020

Well, until the hiring freeze there were opportunities at the Embassy. Working on the economy here isn't really an option. There is only a de facto work agreement, but not sure what hoops you have to jump through. If you're able to get a job, the wages are extremely low. For example, a full-time ER doctor is paid $1000 USD/month. That includes on-call hours. - Jun 2017

Sort of. Low pay, low professional standards. Be a forceful advocate to get paid if you are going to freelance. - May 2016

Not really. Schools and a few NGO's - Dec 2014

Not on the local economy. Some spouses were able to work in the embassy. - Jul 2014

I think so. - Sep 2013

No, but there are 3-4 EFM positions. - Nov 2010

Through some NGO's but don't expect much money. - Feb 2010
