It is convenient to both Scandinavia and mainland Europe. Crossing over to Sweden is easy via train, car or ferry, and a trip to Oslo via overnight ferry can be accomplished in a weekend. It's approximately 4 hours to Germany (driving, then ferry boat) which gives you access to the rest of mainland Europe.
