Phnom Penh - Post Report Question and Answers

What have been the highlights of your time in this country? Best trips or experiences?

Obviously Siem Reap and Angkor Wat. Lots of other places to visit too- Kirirom mountains, Kampot pepper farms, Koh Rong Islands. Outside of Phnom Penh, there's lots of lush greenery to explore... when it's not scorching out. - May 2024

Meeting and really getting to know the local population. Attending Cambodian weddings, visiting Angkor Wat during the pandemic, island vacation at Koh Russey, trips to Kep with our dog. - Jul 2021

Kids’ school, freedom from CoVid!, weekend escapes, cycling across the river from the city. - Nov 2020

Getting to know local people has really made my time here pleasant. Speaking Khmer with locals opens a lot of doors to cultural experiences I wouldn't have had otherwise, and it changes the way people interact with you. You feel less like a walking dollar sign and more like a human. Khmer culture values harmony and maintaining a humble, positive vibe and generally just being chill will earn you a lot of street cred around here. - May 2017

The Cambodian people are lovely and the country has an amazing and rich -- though tragic -- history. It was a privilege to learn about it. Angkor Wat is amazing! Good beach trips (if you can get over the trash issue)and places like Kampt and Battambang are gems. It is also really easy and relatively cheap to travel to other great SE Asia destinations from Phnom Penh. - Oct 2016

Weather is usually pretty sunny. It's just hot and humid (sometimes with rain/flooding). Seeing Siem Reap and Angkor Wat a few times since can get there through US$12-15 buseses and cheap guest houses. - May 2015

Internal trips to Siem Reap/Angkor temples. Regional travel to Singapore, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia. - Feb 2015

Travel (Angkor Wat, the southern coast and trips in the region), great nightlife and an interesting group of friends, fascinating work experience, and just generally getting to know the country and its people. - Jan 2012

Traveling - Aug 2011

Visiting Angkor Wat, traveling to Bangkok and Saigon. Visiting the dark (but interesting) sites dedicated to the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge. - Oct 2010
