Do you have any recommendations regarding mobile phones? Did you keep your home-country plan or use a local provider?

Google Fi. Why Fi? Because you immediately have cell service in whatever European country you land for your weekend trips. Take an unlocked phone if you plan to get a local SIM. I think a local SIM service is $5-$10/month. Fi is more expensive but the true ease of international service makes it worth it. Wifi calling with Fi is now available on iPhones. - Jun 2023

Bring an unlocked phone. Buy a SIM card. Top it up monthly or so for about 5-7 euros per month. Turn on roaming when you go back to the U.S. because it's cheaper than using an American SIM card. - Mar 2019

I bought a local SIM and pay monthly. It’s not very expensive. - Jun 2018

Get one! Particularly a Smartphone because Google Maps got me out out trouble more than once. Well, it got me into trouble sometimes too but hey- it's always a work in progress. Thanks to recent acquisition of Internet in the past 10 years, 3G (and maybe 4G if not already) is aplenty. Don't bother with VM. No one uses it. - Feb 2014

Vodafone. - Jan 2013

You can get pretty cheap pay-as-you-go phones from Vodafone. - May 2011

Necessary and pretty cheap. Orange and Vodafone are the most common. You can either buy a plan or get pay as you go. Getting set up can be a hassle but it's getting better. - Dec 2008
