Monterrey - Post Report Question and Answers

There are many Mexicos. The dangers of the immediate border region are one Mexico. The narco wars portrayed in Narcos: Mexico are another. So is Mexico City, with its vibrant, diverse neighborhoods. Each of these realities is part of the broader national story. Monterrey is no less complex as it’s a unique and important facet of that story. Living here offers a chance to understand a region that’s central to North American trade, diplomacy, and identity. It’s not always easy, but it’s rewarding. Coming to Monterrey lets you engage with one of the most significant yet often overlooked parts of our most important neighbor. - Mar 2025

Travel to other parts of Mexico is cheap from Monterrey. Faucet water is drinkable and you can flush toilet paper (in most buildings). Not very walkable but lots of green spaces. - Sep 2018

Just go. - Mar 2014

The violence gives life here an underlying tension, but the quality of life is high. I would definitely come here again. - Oct 2012

Despite the security situation, which came to color our entire lives in Monterrey, I really loved living there. The people are amazingly nice and friendly. We got really close to our neighbors, and the local staff at the consulate are also quite friendly (they are of course busy with their own family and friends, but still just in general welcoming). - Oct 2010

With a large family (with kids) or a big group of friends, this could be a fun city. - Jan 2008
