No specific recommendations, but I know there lots of options out there. There are movies and TV shows (Sicario, Narcos, Breaking Bad) that feature Juarez, though I haven’t seen them. Born to Run is a book about the indigenous people of the Chihuahua state, and there are tons of books about the borderlands. Lots of movies/books that feature Mexico more broadly. - Jun 2019

Watch Sicario just to tell yourself that it's not like that at all. I recommend books by Luis Alberto Urrea to get you started. From there, I would pick up a syllabus from a Latin American history/culture class. There's a lot to learn. - Jan 2019
