Rome - Post Report Question and Answers

Are there personal security concerns to be aware of at this post? Please describe.

Lots of theft in the tourist areas. A number of Embassy folks have their apartments ransacked, but most of this is due to poor security on their part (not locking the door). - Aug 2024

Rome is very safe, no issues. Lots of police and army all over the center. If you venture outside the city center, I suppose you could find some shady areas, but that is any city. Just use common sense and you will be fine. There has been some issues with overpopulation of wild boars in public parks, in the center of Rome, that have been harassing people. So I guess I don't recommend hanging out by trash cans in the middle of the night, if that is your thing. - Sep 2022

Petty theft rampant (mostly by Roma people aka "gypsies" on public transit). Physical security in the centre not bad - normal precautions. Apartment break-in rates are high. Organized crime filters down to many levels (harassment by street vendors etc) and goes uncountered by the police. - Oct 2014

As in any major city, you don't leave your belongings unattended! Muggings and personal assaults are fairly rare, put petty theft/pick-pocketings and home break-ins in the more affluent neighborhoods are not uncommon. - May 2013

If you act like a tourist, expect to get pick-pocketed. - Apr 2012

Pickpockets, home burglaries. The Italian police just arrested a band of Romanian acrobats who were burgarizing apartments--using scaffolding and railings to ascend up the buildings! - Aug 2010

Mostly petty theft and some areas have problems with break-ins. Keep your shutters closed at night or when you're gone and that will deter most thieves. - Apr 2009

There are no major security concerns. Rome is known for pick-pockets but not really for violent crime. However, break-in's are also somewhat common. For the most part, using common sense will keep you safe. - Feb 2008

Lots of petty theft but that is about it. Hardly any violent crime to speak of. - Feb 2008
