What types of jobs do most expatriate spouses/partners have? Locally based or telecommuting? Full-time or part-time? Can you comment on local salary scales?

Embassy employment, however my spouse hasn't been able to get a job and many other spouses are unable to get a job, it's a competitive location. - Aug 2024

It's a big Embassy so there are some EFM jobs out there. The local economy isn't that great and unemployment rates in Italy are higher than the rest of Western Europe, so I imagine it would be a struggle to find any local economy jobs with a respectable salary. - Sep 2022

No. The economy is depressed. Youth unemployment is 30%+. Work visas are impossible to get unless it's to teach English. - Oct 2014

Unemployment is currently around 35%, so adjust your expectations accordingly. The US Embassy has a dedicated Global Employment Advisor who has been known to be helpful to spouses of US employers. To work on the local economy you must have fluent Italian, otherwise the chances of finding a job are slim to non-existent. - May 2013

I'm not sure, but the job market seems difficult and requires specific skill sets and fluency in Italian. - Apr 2012

Not unless they're fluent in Italian. Many of the local staff positions at the embassy require fluent Italian, which usually leaves out the spouses. - Aug 2010

No. None. Do not come here thinking you will just find a job, because you won't. The locals can't even find a decent job here (unless they are nicely connected). This goes double if you are the spouse of a U.S. Government employee. NO. JOBS. AT. ALL. No one can fix that for you, either. Resign yourself to a period of unemployment or find another option. If you manage to get something - anything, you are among the lucky few. - Feb 2008

If you don't speak Italian, finding work is difficult. - Feb 2008
