Rome - Post Report Question and Answers
Morale among expats:
Depends on the day. Rome and Italy are great, but as with any country not your own, living here takes some getting used to. - May 2013
I think most people are happy here. People who aren't comforable with chaos or cling to silly ideals of order, structure, and timeliness seem less happy. Count to ten, chant serenity now, embrace chaos, and hopefully that will work for you. - Apr 2012
The Americans who live here permanently love it. Some of the diplomats posted here love it. Others are curtailing to anywhere they can, just to get out of here. If you're not into inner-city living, you might have a hard time. Its noisy, dirty, smelly, decaying and the driving is insane -- and Romans can be quite rude. On the other hand, I love the people I work with and know personally. It will be heart-wrenching to leave them. - Aug 2010
Good, bad, and lots of in between. I've heard a wide range of opinions, so really read these posts and talk to people you know in Rome before making a decision. - Apr 2009
Most people love it, but some hate it here. Those who love it, love the food, the travelling, the museums, etc. Those who hate it are upset because it's an expensive town, very chaotic by American standards, and it's painfully difficult to find a job here. We all complain about the same things, but in the end most of us all really like the wine and the olive oil and beautiful country side. - Feb 2008
Fairly good but Rome can really get to you. You have to come here determined to get along with the city and not let it get the best of you. Don't fight the life, just accept it, and you'll be fine. - Feb 2008
