Are there problems with ethnic, race/racial minorities or religious prejudices? Gender equality?
There are some inequality issues with migrants from Africa and South Central Asia..... and it's always a hot political issue with the media talking heads For gender equality, society seems slightly more male-dominated than the U.S. and other Western European countries, comparably. But generally speaking, the gender equality here is still better than the majority of the world. - Sep 2022
Yes. 90% people of brown/black people you will see are migrants who may not be here legally and may not make their living legally. Older generations are still not accepting of immigrants. Banana peels still get thrown on soccer fields. Women should be prepared to be looked at on the street. - Oct 2014
There is some racial prejudice and some intolerance to foreigners. Gender prejudices are seen more rarely, and pregnant women are mostly given red-carpet treatment everywhere. - May 2013
I've not encountered much prejudice here in Rome. Being Filipino-American, I've actually encountered less discrimination here in Rome than I did growing up in Florida. However, I do get tired of Italians asking me for directions as if I were a native Roman. - Apr 2012

Italians are sometimes very old fashioned regarding women although the situation appears to be improving. Men are somewhat condescending towards women - more so than we're used to in the U.S. Having said that, however, they're often super nice to women in a way they won't be towards men. As for racial prejudice, well, it seems that the less you look like an Italian, the harder things will be for you. - Feb 2008
