Is this a good city for single people? For couples? For families? Why or why not?
Sure, it's good for everyone. I would just add that Rome has a rotating population - lots of people that are living here temporarily, so that is the biggest challenge for establishing relationships, either romantic or platonic. - Sep 2022
Lots of activities for singles and couples. However, it's surprisingly difficult to connect and form friendships despite the large expat community (there are too many expats, especially if you're in international organization circles, so people stop expanding their circles at some point). It is pretty good for singles and couples with means in every respect. There are many social events and restaurants and cultural events of which to take advantage. Facilities for families (parks, children's libraries, paved sidewalks for strollers, etc.) are woefully lacking. The main large parks are Villa Borghese (like NYC's Central Park), Villa Ada, and Villa Pamphili---and there are a few dog parks. Some restaurants are starting to offer more kids' menus. Italians love children, so where they lack in facilities they make up for it in willingness to accommodate you and your children. - May 2013

I think this is a good place if you are into nightlife, be it singles or couples. I can't imagine having kids here. Restaurants don't open for dinner until 7:30 or 8:00 pm. You can't drive anywhere quickly because the traffic is brutal and to find parking is a miracle, so hauling your kids to activities would be excruciating. - Aug 2010

This city is hardest for families with children still in diapers & strollers and for single men. The sidewalks are too narrow, cracked, and bumpy for most strollers (ramps are really hard find, too), and diaper changing stations are RARE in restrooms. Don't get me wrong - Italians LOVE babies, but it's really difficult to get around town if you have a little one. Single men used to American women often find that single Italian women have very different standards than American women. Most men simply do not have the patience to pursue the local women, and the local women apparently find American men too... impatient?cI reallydon't know. I just know what my single male friends have told me. It's a great city for everyone else! - Feb 2008
Families: any post is good for families if you are committed to not letting Rome get you down. It is very difficult to see any of the sites with very young children but with imagination you can do it. Babysitting is expensive and a bit tough to find but don't let it get you down. There are ALWAYS sources through the embassy of reliable and available babysitters! Plus because the embassy community is so large, there are ALWAYS families with high school age kids who want to babysit! Couples: Most definitely if adventure is your thing. I don't know anyone who has seen all of Italy! Singles: I am green with envy of all singles here. What a life! - Feb 2008
