How much of the local language do you need for daily living? Are local language classes/tutors available and affordable?

None, but locals really appreciate even modest Icelandic because they know it is such an obscure language. Worth learning pronunciation of names and place names . - Sep 2021

More than I thought I would. Even though most everyone speaks English, most websites are all in Icelandic, as are newspapers. And it's not like there are a lot of English - Icelandic cognates. Icelandic is a very hard language to learn. - Feb 2013


Almost everyone in Iceland speaks perfect English. Some basic Icelandic is always a nice touch and is appreciated by the local community. - Jul 2011
