Are preschools available? Day care? Are these expensive? What has been your experience with them, if any? Do the schools provide before- and/or after-school care?

Yes, not sure. - Apr 2023

I also can't speak to this, but I do see daycares all over the city. - Mar 2023

Yes, preschools and day care are available. No experience with them, though. - Jun 2022

Widely available and not expensive but culturally pretty different from the US. That's fine but parents should be prepared to adjust their expectations. - Jan 2020

Yes, many. Getting someone to answer the phone or reply to an email is a challenge. You'll probably need to show up in person to get their attention. My daughter's preschool (Morningstar Montessori) is great and costs about US$4000 per year. Note: preschools will be on the southern calendar and AISJ does a poor job is making ANY of the holidays overlap (or coincide with USG holidays). - Dec 2019

Private preschools are good and low-cost (few hundred dollars a month). - Mar 2019

Many preschools scattered around town-- close to either home or work. Embassy families put their kids in several different preschools. Most are very good. - Jun 2012

I have had my youngest in two of the local preschools here and both have been fantastic. There are many to chose from - you have several 'international' preschools were many of the diplomats send their children, and, because English is the most common spoken language, you also have the option of neighborhood schools. My daughter is in a neighborhood school that is top-notch and it's been a great way for us to feel more connected with South Africans. - Aug 2009

I have a pre-schooler in the Rainbow Montessori. The school has two campuses and several teachers and assistants. There are pre-schools in most neighborhoods. - Feb 2009

My kids went to a good Montessori school. Other preschools abound. - Jun 2008
