Hyderabad - Post Report Question and Answers

What kind of vehicle(s) including electric ones do you recommend bringing to post, given the terrain, infrastructure, availability of parts, burglary/carjacking risks, etc.? What kind of car or vehicles do you advise not to bring?

I bought a car from another individual at post. It's a pretty standard issue Maruti Suzuki. I like it because there are Suzuki repair shops all over the place, so if you have an issue, you'll be able to get it fixed. I also like it because it is small, so easier to drive in the traffic, and I'm fine with it getting scraped. I've never worried about carjacking. If you want a car, I recommend getting it here, as it will be affordable and will have the steering wheel on the right (which is required in India). - Mar 2025

Bigger is better. We got into at least 3 car accidents and you want more protection than less. Some people drove motorbikes. Don’t bring an expensive car as it will get dinged up. We never worried about burglary/carjacking because our driver was always with our car. During monsoon season, you will be happy with a high-clearance vehicle. - Jun 2024

You can't really bring anything, as India doesn't make it easy to import a vehicle. Your best bet is to get on the CLO newsletter distro early and look for cars for sale. People also buy new and used on the local market. There's a variety and a lot of people have small-ish SUVs, but people also have sedans. Scooters and even motorcycles are also popular. - Apr 2024
