Vientiane - Post Report Question and Answers

Are there personal security concerns to be aware of at this post? Please describe.

Traffic collisions, food-borne illness, mosquito-borne illnesses, and accidents are the most common health and safety problems. Personal safety in terms of crime is not too much of a concern. Home invasions are up year over year, but crime overall is not high in the expat/international community. A few people have had motorbikes stolen. - Dec 2024

We feel safe here as we try to be situationally aware of where we are. We lock our doors to our homes and our cars and try to exercise good judgment. Guns are generally not prevalent in Laos as it is in the U.S. - Mar 2024

Overall, it is a safe country. I have felt safe traveling alone as a single woman. However, there have been some incidents that make you be cautious and I do carry pepper spray now. It's important to keep in mind that while Vientiane feels like a "large town" you should still use your common sense and not walk alone at night or in dark places. - Mar 2023

I generally found Vientiane to be a very safe city with little crime. - Jun 2020

Not really. Petty crime exists, but it's better here than in most countries. - Oct 2018

We did have a few house break ins during our time, but no one was hurt as it was a time when people were away. During our time we also had 24-hour guards posted at Embassy housing clusters. As in any city in the world, there is petty theft (e.g., purse stolen from person on motorbike, pickpocketing in touristy areas). - Jan 2014
