Vientiane - Post Report Question and Answers

Are there any unusual problems with insects or other infestations in housing?

Insects are plentiful, especially during the wet season. Ants of all sizes can be problematic, and it's very much case-by-case, house-by-house. Snakes are all over. Dogs are not kept indoors, so they seem like strays but they usually have homes. Vientiane is more like a collection of small villages than it is a developed city, so there are pockets of uncleared jungle and thus animals and bugs all over. - Dec 2024

Ants, roaches, and geckos are pretty common. Mosquitos are here all the time and dengue fever is common you have to put on mosquito repellent especially if you have young kids. We sleep with the mosquito nets above our beds at times. - Mar 2024

From time to time I have had the occasional roach in my apartment. In the standalone houses, cobras and other snakes, geckos, and rats have been an issue. - Mar 2023

It is a tropical country so don't be surprised to find ants or other six-legged friends in your house. Mosquitoes were not too bad. I have seen one snake near my house in nearly two years here. - Jun 2020

There are many insects here. Ants, mosquitos, etc. It's a tropical environment. - Oct 2018

Mosquitos mostly, especially during the rainy season. We had nets over the beds (that GSO installed for us) and sprayed the kids. We managed three years with only a handful of bites. There was a great company in Canada that had pre-treated nets and shipped them pretty quickly. - Jan 2014
