What kinds of gyms or other sports/workout facilities are available? Are they expensive?
There is a gym at the embassy, which seems to get limited use. But a much larger and well-outfitted gym can be found in the clubhouse at the largest housing compound, the Presidential Villas. You’ll find free weights, weight machines, treadmills, stationery bikes, elliptical machines, and much more. There is no additional charge to use these facilities. - Feb 2018
As mentioned, the main embassy compound has an excellent gym and is free for American embassy personnel. It is not open to non-embassy personnel. There are a couple of other gyms available at the two main hotels in town, but they are not very big and seem to focus on machines, in my opinion poorly equipped if you expect more than just the basics. In addition, they are expensive. - May 2017
Main embassy housing compound has a great gym. There are other facilities, but challenging to use given cost and gender restraints. Post restricts most outdoor activities, but you can partake in weekly sports clubs during the cooler months. - Nov 2016
Diplomats have ready access to good gyms, pools, tennis courts. There are also multiple sports leagues, rugby, basketball, soccer, yoga, horse-riding, hiking, Red Sea diving; - Oct 2016
There is a really nice gym at the Presidential Villas. It's free. There is nothing else. Also if you like biking or running this isn't the place for you. Current security restrictions don't allow you to go out there to do that. The road at the Presidential Villas is about 1/3 mile, so it's not for long distance running since it's a rectangle and the 90 degree turns won't be good for your joints. - Mar 2016
There is a small gym at the Embassy itself, and a much larger one at the main housing compound. Both are free to employees. - Jun 2015
There is the main compound gym, which is sufficient to get you in shape. There is nowhere to run because of the security risk, so runners should plan to do something different while here. - Mar 2015
The clubhouse at the villas has a very nice gym as does the Embassy. The local hotels also have gyms and pools but they are very expensive, like US$150 a month. - Apr 2014
Yes, at the embassy and at the Rotana hotel - Jun 2011
The embassy has a gym. It's not great but not horrible. - Apr 2010
I took an elliptical trainer with me, but there are some small gyms at hotels or the tennis club - May 2009
