Nouakchott - Post Report Question and Answers
Are there any particular mental health issues that tend to crop up at post, such as Seasonal Affective Disorder (winter blues)?
Depression from tinted windows in homes; ground-hog day blues from doing the same thing over and over again; the place feels like an isolated outpost at the end of the world... People are often overworked too. Look, I am not sugar coating Nouakchott like so many other posts here do because you need to get in the right frame of mind to survive. If you go in thinking like the last poster here who called it a "gem," you will be shocked and may crack. Multiple people simply break mentally, including non-DoS. - Dec 2024
Nothing that would seem out of the ordinary. It is a fairly isolated country but the community is very connected and supportive. There are also short flights to the Canary Islands (1.5hrs) if you need to get yourself a mental break from Nouakchott. - Jan 2023
